Japanese Semiconductor Giant Will Build DRAM Wafer Plant in Suzhou

Japanese semiconductor giant Elpida announced on August 6 that it had reached an agreement with the Chinese risk investment company SVG, which stated that the two sides will jointly set up a joint venture in Suzhou, specializing in production of the most advanced dynamic random access memory (DRAM) wafers in the new plant.

It was learnt that total investment volume of the new plant would be JPY540b (JPY109 equals to about USD1), and the plant would be put into operation in early 2010, mainly supplying to Chinese market with rapid expansion. The initial monthly production capacity was 40, 000, and the future production capacity could be expanded to 80,000.

It was introduced that Elpida would finance JPY30b to the newly formed joint venture, accounting for 39% in the fund ratio, and it was expected to become the largest shareholder.
